Not one reef. A whole seascape.

The Great Barrier Reef is a complex of coral reefs, shoals and islands in the Pacific Ocean, off the northeastern coast of Australia.

Seen from above, it reads as a long, shifting geometry of blue. Beneath the surface, it is less like a single structure than a living neighbourhood: coral colonies build habitat, currents carry food, and countless animals use the reef as shelter, nursery and hunting ground.

The reef has long been known and used by Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, for whom it remains an important part of local cultures and spirituality.

Architecture made

Coral animals create the three-dimensional framework. That framework creates opportunity: surfaces to settle on, crevices to hide in, and feeding grounds for the wider food web.

A system under strain.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park protects a large part of the reef, but protection cannot remove every pressure acting on a warming, connected ocean.

Climate change

The Australian Government’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority identified climate change as the most significant environmental threat.

Marine heat

Warmer water can stress corals and contribute to bleaching, when corals lose the microscopic algae that help sustain them.

Local pressures

Water quality, coastal activity and other human pressures can compound stress on reef habitats and wildlife.
